Physical Activity Denied: Skateboards and Youth Active Transporation:
September 2008, school is starting again. What's happening with skateboarding in communities across Canada?
Huge efforts are being made to help youth becoming more active and youth have found something that catches them. Skateboarding is the cool activity! However we (schools, communities, adults...???) don't make it easy....if at all possible for youth to be active per their interest in skateboarding. There are lots of rules and policies with the message "No skateboarding here"
Per a google search re: skateboards and bylaws -here are a few interesting links! Bylaws range from outright banning all skateboards, outlining instances for iimpounding skateboards to requiring helmets and stricting use to specific areas. One boarder in Fredericton, NB may be going to jail. Bylaws and reactions are based on worries are about injuries to boarders and pedestrians, damage to property. other? Can skateboarding fit well into an Active Transportation master plan? Can we 'share the road' with boarders?
Bring your questions and suggestions to the discussions!
